PROCEDURE

Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is an endoscopic examination that gives a direct view of the inside of the large intestine (colon), the rectum and the final section of the small intestine (terminal ileum). It is used to diagnose and treat a range of conditions affecting the lower digestive tract.

Before

Before

You will be given instructions to follow a low-residue diet, or clear liquids only, for 24 to 48 hours before the test.

Duration

Duration

You will take the prescribed bowel prep solution to fully empty the bowel, so the doctor can get a clear view.

Downtime

Downtime

Let your doctor know about all the medications you take (especially blood thinners, aspirin and anti-inflammatory painkillers known as NSAIDs), as well as any allergies.

If you will be sedated, it is best to bring someone with you.
On the day of the test, avoid solid food. You may also need to stop drinking fluids for a while beforehand.

The Process

  • You will usually lie on your left side.
  • If you have opted for sedation, an IV line is placed.
  • The colonoscope is inserted through the anus and carefully guided through the rectum and colon. Along the way, air or CO₂ is introduced to gently expand the bowel so its lining can be seen clearly.
  • The endoscopist then examines the colon wall systematically while slowly withdrawing the scope. Biopsies can be taken or polyps removed during the same procedure.
  • The procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes, depending on the circumstances and whether any lesions need to be removed.

The Colonoscope & Equipment

The colonoscope is a thin, flexible tube with a camera and a light at its tip. It is inserted through the anus and gently advanced as far as the cecum and/or the terminal ileum.

Special channels running through it allow instruments to pass for taking biopsies or removing polyps.

After the test

  • You will be fully alert again within a few minutes.
  • If you were sedated, you should not drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day.
  • After you leave, you may feel some discomfort or bloating from the air introduced during the test. This usually passes quickly.
  • Biopsy results are available within a few days, and your doctor will contact you to discuss the findings and any next steps.

Συχνές Ερωτήσεις

  • Does a colonoscopy hurt?

The test is not considered painful. You may feel pressure, bloating or mild discomfort as the scope is inserted or as the colon is gently inflated. Sedation keeps you comfortable throughout.

  • How long does it take?

Usually 15–30 minutes. Allowing for preparation and recovery, you can expect to spend 1–2 hours at the center in total.

  • How often do I need one?

For people at average risk, guidelines recommend a colonoscopy roughly every 10 years, starting at around age 45–50, as long as there are no additional risk factors.

  • What are the possible complications?

Colonoscopy is generally very safe. Rarely, the following can occur:

    • Perforation of the bowel (very rare)
    • Bleeding after a polyp is removed
    • A reaction to the sedation medication
    • Bowel irritation caused by the prep

The chances of any of these are small, while the benefits, in terms of diagnosis and prevention, are significant.
